Or at best, deeply conflicted. How else to explain the idea of combining hunter safety orange and camouflage?
The explanation is that most animals, especially deer, are color blind. So the patterns help the hunter blend into the environment. Whilst the blaze orange helps other hunters see him. And hopefully not shoot them in the face.

Dennis, when I saw the picture I knew the answer (correct Matt). It was the year after I got married when I was convinced to go hunting with my friend on opening day. When I purchased my “orange” I was taught that deer are color blind. The trip was terrible, except for the drinking involved the night before the big hunt. Needless to say I fell asleep under a tree and never aimed my rifle.
